Fearless Love

Love is a universal language. Everyone speaks love, desires love, gives love. But do we really understand what it is?

How many of you have heard this passage of scripture found in 1 Corinthians 13?

“Love is patient,
Love is kind
Love does not envy,
is not boastful,
is not arrogant,
is not rude,
is not self-seeking,
is not irritable,
and does not keep a record of wrongs.
Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth.”

When you heard this passage, what is the first thing you thought?

For me, I used to immediately think of a wedding. This is the typical “wedding” passage, after all. And yes, this is a good guide of what love should look like, but if we dig a little deeper there is so much more to this passage of scripture than just a nice thing to say at a wedding.

So first we need to know how to define love. It’s simple, in 3 words the Bible tells us what the definition of love is “God is love!...” - 1 John 4:17-19 MSG. Okay so if this true, then we can take this principal and plug it into our iconic wedding passage and read it to ourselves a bit different.

“GOD is patient,
GOD is kind
GOD does not envy,
GOD is not boastful,
GOD is not arrogant,
GOD is not rude,
GOD is not self-seeking,
GOD is not irritable,
and GOD does not keep a record of wrongs.
GOD finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth.”

Okay so we got that down; God = Love.

But we as humans were created to be loved and be love too.

In Genesis 1:26, Moses tells us that we, humans, were created in God’s image.

“God spoke: ‘Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature…’”

So if that is true then we can also say

“I am patient,
I am kind
I do not envy,
I am not boastful,
I am not arrogant,
I am not rude,
I am not self-seeking,
I am not irritable,
and I do not keep a record of wrongs.
I find no joy in unrighteousness but rejoice in the truth.”

How many of you can honestly say that what we just read is true? Cause I know for a fact, I can be rude, unkind, impatient.

So if we as humans are walking around the earth not reflecting Him the way we should, where does that leave us all?

It leaves us really confused.

Our mission in this life is to love the hell out of people, literally. And the only way to do that is to love like Jesus. To do that you must be fearless. People are imperfect, and they make mistakes, but to love in spite of that is the the real boss thing to do. Love without expectation, agenda, or time table. We should be walking around sprinkling God’s love on all those we encounter.

Our Prayer:

Lord, if we are made in your image, we are made to be love here on Earth. Help us remember to be patient and kind, not envious, boastful, arrogant, rude, self-seeking, or irritable. Let us love unconditionally, salting this world and those who don’t know You with Your love. In your loving name we pray, amen!
