Overcoming Lies

Key Verse:

“8 When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. 9 Then the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’

10 He replied, ‘I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.’

11 ‘Who told you that you were naked?’ the Lord God asked.” -Genesis 3:8-11 NLT

I love this passage of scripture. It wasn’t until pretty recent that I actually understood what took place at “the fall,” but this portion of it is my favorite. It is something that I frequently repeat to myself time to time: “Who told you that you were _______?”

For all of us the blank is different. Who told you that you weren’t good enough, who told you that you weren’t worthy of love, who told you that you were destined for divorce, who told you that you weren’t capable. The list of fill-in-the-blanks can go on and on and will look differently for each of us, but the one fact that ties them all together is that they just aren’t true.

We’ve all had things happen to us in our past, that is a fact, but what we decide to come into agreement with based on those facts determines if we are coming into agreement with lies or truths. We get to choose how those facts mold our truths.

Lie is defined several different ways, but one definition is to be in or assume a horizontal or resting position on a supporting surface. Now obviously this doesn’t apply to the lies that we believe, but it holds a characteristic of a lie. Assume a horizontal or resting position on a supporting surface, so basically like your contact lenses lays over your eyes.

As life goes on and the facts of life (see what I did there) pile up, the lies and truths begin to form a contact lens over our heart. Whereas everything you experience goes through the lens of those lies or truths. So, what you choose to believe to be true about the facts of life determines what beliefs you take up in your heart.

I encourage you to ask yourself what lies have I come into agreement with over the years unbeknownst to me? Now, this can be a scary thing at times, and this is where being fearless comes into play. To overcome the lies you must be fearless enough to partner with the Lord in this journey to uncover the lies we have agreed with and then do the work that it takes to change how we think.

What does this look like? Flood yourselves with the truth about who you are and what you were destined for. Where does one find this information? In His word; it’s the blueprint of our identities. How are you supposed to know what is truth and what are lies if you’ve never read the blueprint? When you know what God says about you, then it makes it easier to question every false accusation. You can easily say to yourself, “who told you that you were________?”

Don’t just use your time fasting as a way to take a break from social media or take a break from eating bad foods, take that time to be intentional about getting in His word, understanding what it means to be fearless, and find those truths.

Our Prayer:

Lord, we thank you that in the face of lies, we are armed with Your truth. We ask that as we use this time of prayer and fasting to seek You and Your word, that You would reveal to us our identity in you. Empowered and freed by Your Truth, we can stand up to any lie. We can be fearless. In your name, amen!
